1961 Topps #318 Danny O'Connell

About Danny O'Connell
Number 318 in the 1961 Topps set's fourth series, this card catches O'Connell at 32 in the first year of the expansion Washington Senators, the club he had talked into signing him as a free agent after his release. He played in the franchise's first regular-season game, the Presidential opener at Griffith Stadium on April 10, going 2-for-4 in a 4-3 loss to the White Sox. Starting 132 games between second and third base, he hit .260 and led Washington in hits (128), walks (77) and runs (61), posted a career-best .361 on-base percentage, stole a career-high 15 bases, and topped the American League with 15 sacrifice hits.
Danny O'Connell was an infielder who played ten major league seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Braves, New York/San Francisco Giants and Washington Senators. A Paterson, New Jersey, product signed by Brooklyn, he was dealt to Pittsburgh after the 1949 season and broke in at Forbes Field in July 1950, batting .292 and finishing third in National League Rookie of the Year voting before two years of Army service during the Korean War. He came back to hit .294 in 1953 behind a 26-game hitting streak, then went to Milwaukee that December in a deal that brought the Pirates six players and $100,000. He was the Braves' regular second baseman until June 15, 1957, when Milwaukee packaged him with Bobby Thomson and Ray Crone to land Red Schoendienst for the pennant drive. As a Giant he scored the first run in the first major league game played on the West Coast, on April 15, 1958. He spent all of 1960 at Triple-A Tacoma, hit .312 there, and took his unconditional release to sell himself to a new expansion club. Over 1,143 games he batted .260 with 1,049 hits, 39 home runs and 320 RBIs. He died in October 1969 at 40, of a heart attack at the wheel of his car near his New Jersey home.
