1961 Topps #246 Bob Davis

About Bob Davis
Topps put Davis in Angels colors for a team he never threw a pitch for. After the 1960 season the expansion Washington Senators drafted him out of the Kansas City system and shipped him to Los Angeles the same day for Jim Mahoney; instead of reporting, Davis retired and went back to Yale. So number 246 pictures a Los Angeles Angel who had already left the game, his 0-4 record with Kansas City complete. The card sits in the set's third series, and it is his recognized rookie card.
Robert Edward Davis was a right-handed pitcher born September 11, 1933, in New York City. A product of the Great Neck public schools and the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut, he pitched at Yale, where on April 25, 1953 he no-hit Cornell in a 3-0 win. Kansas City signed him as an amateur free agent in 1955, and in his first pro summer he threw a seven-inning no-hitter for the Class C Burlington A's against Trois-Rivieres, striking out ten. He debuted for the Athletics on July 26, 1958, working the first six innings of a 4-3 loss to Baltimore, and came back in 1960 after winning 16 games at Shreveport. Across 29 big-league games, 25 of them in relief, he went 0-4 with a 5.71 ERA and one save, allowing 76 hits and 34 walks in 63 innings while striking out 50. Six feet tall and 170 pounds, he threw and batted right-handed. In the December 1960 American League expansion draft the new Washington Senators took him and dealt him the same day to the Los Angeles Angels for Jim Mahoney; rather than report, Davis retired and returned to Yale. He later earned a master's degree in history, and died December 22, 2001, in New York.
