About Faye Throneberry

The expansion Los Angeles Angels claimed Throneberry in the December 14, 1960 expansion draft, and he spent the franchise's inaugural season with the club - his eighth and last in the majors. The playing time never came: 24 games, 31 at-bats, and only five appearances in the outfield before he was optioned to Toronto of the International League on July 22, closing out his big-league career. This card is #282 in the 1961 Topps set, a third-series card.

Maynard Faye Throneberry was born June 22, 1931, in Fisherville, Tennessee, and raised in nearby Collierville. A left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing outfielder listed at five foot eleven and 185 pounds, he signed with the Boston Red Sox in June 1950, after Commissioner Happy Chandler voided an earlier contract with Detroit. He debuted for Boston on April 15, 1952, and two days later hit his first big-league homer, a grand slam off Washington's Don Johnson, finishing the year at .258 in 98 games. A two-year Army hitch, part of it in Korea, cost him 1953 and 1954. He returned in 1955 to open in left field during Ted Williams' brief retirement and batted .362 that April before a May 7 shoulder separation ended the run. Dealt to Washington in 1957, he had his best season in 1959: 82 hits and a career-high ten home runs. Over eight seasons he hit .236 with 29 home runs and 137 RBI in 521 games. Older brother of Marvelous Marv Throneberry, the more famous of the two for his misadventures in the field and on the bases, Faye later trained bird dogs, handling the pointer Miller's Miss Knight to the 1973 National Championship at Ames Plantation. He died April 26, 1999, in Memphis at age 67.
