1961 Topps #195 Jerry Casale

About Jerry Casale
Card 195 puts Casale in an Angels cap, and the timing was tight: Los Angeles took him from Boston with its third pick in the December 1960 expansion draft, then shipped him to Detroit for Jim Donohue on June 7, 1961, after 13 games and seven starts. He owns two curious lines in Angels history. He was the franchise's first losing pitcher, beaten 3-0 at Fenway on April 15 in a game where rookie Carl Yastrzemski drove in his first two big league runs, and on May 9 he hit the first home run by an Angels pitcher, off Boston's Ike Delock, the same afternoon he served up Yastrzemski's first career homer. It is a second-series card.
Gennaro Joseph "Jerry" Casale, born in Brooklyn on September 27, 1933, was a hard-throwing right-hander signed out of Manual Training High School by Red Sox scout Bots Nekola in October 1951 for a bonus reported at 30,000 dollars. He spent five seasons in Boston's farm system, going 17-11 and leading the American Association in strikeouts for Triple-A Louisville in 1955, then lost 1957 and most of 1958 to the U.S. Army before debuting that September. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he threw hard, walked plenty, and could swing the bat: in his first big league start, April 15, 1959, he beat Washington 7-3 and hit a three-run homer. That rookie year was his best, 13-8 with a 4.31 ERA, nine complete games and three shutouts, and he was named the Red Sox rookie of the year. A sore arm followed. He pitched for Boston through 1960, then for the Los Angeles Angels and Detroit Tigers, finishing 17-24 with a 5.08 ERA and 207 strikeouts in five seasons. He ran Pino's, a Manhattan Italian restaurant, from 1977 until 2003, and died February 9, 2019.
