1961 Topps #154 Bobby Del Greco

About Bobby Del Greco
Del Greco opened 1961 as a backup to Tony Gonzalez in the Philadelphia outfield, hitting .259 in 41 games before the Phillies traded him to the Kansas City Athletics for Wes Covington on July 2. He stepped straight into center field for the A's and was their best defensive outfielder the rest of the way, batting .230 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in 74 games after the deal. His 1961 Topps card, number 154, comes from the second series and still shows him in a Phillies uniform. His rookie card is his 1952 Topps issue.
Robert George "Bobby" Del Greco, born April 7, 1933, in Pittsburgh's Hill District, was an outstanding defensive center fielder who played nine major league seasons for six teams between 1952 and 1965. The youngest of ten children, he quit high school after his father died in 1947 and played semipro ball to support his mother; former Pirates third baseman Pie Traynor signed him to a Pittsburgh contract in 1950, and he reached the majors with his hometown club at 19. He went on to play for the Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Kansas City Athletics, finishing with a .229 batting average, 42 home runs and 169 RBIs in 731 games. His instincts and range made him a prize everywhere he went - International League managers repeatedly voted him the league's best defensive outfielder with the best throwing arm during his Triple-A stops - but the bat never caught up, and he shuttled between the majors and the minors for most of his career. His glove helped decide the tight 1956 National League pennant race while he was with St. Louis. He drove a delivery truck for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette into the 1990s, died October 13, 2019, and was inducted posthumously into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
