1961 Topps #262 Tony Curry
Carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy, awarded for his 1960 season.

About Tony Curry
Curry's card sits at number 262 in the third series of Topps' 1961 set. What collectors look for on it is the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy, which he earned for 1960, his one full big-league season: 95 games for the Phillies, a .261 average with six home runs and 34 runs batted in, and a spot second in the National League batting race on May 14 at .380 after a two-homer afternoon at Crosley Field. Frank Howard and Tommy Davis were the other outfielders on that Topps team.
George Anthony Curry, born in Nassau on December 22, 1937, was a Bahamian outfielder who batted and threw left-handed. He grew up on soccer and cricket and did not pick up baseball until he was 15, when U.S. Navy sailors coming ashore were making the game visible in the islands; interest soared once his boyhood friend Andre Rodgers, who lived around the corner, turned pro in 1954 and reached the majors in 1957. The Phillies signed Curry in 1957, and he hit .333, .293 and .313 in his first three minor league seasons, leading the Eastern League in hits, runs, doubles and home runs in 1959 on the way to its Most Valuable Player award. He spent all of 1960 on the Phillies roster, batting .261 with six home runs in 95 games. A spring holdout in 1961 and a 7-for-36 start sent him to Triple-A Buffalo, and a March 1962 trade moved him to Cleveland, where he resurfaced for six weeks as a pinch-hitter in 1966. He finished at .246 in 129 major league games, later served as president of the Bahamas Baseball Association, and died in Nassau in 2006.
