About Camilo Carreon

Carreon broke camp with Chicago in 1961 and stayed for good, getting into 78 games with 63 starts behind the plate as the backup to veteran Sherm Lollar, and batting .271 with four home runs and 27 RBIs in 229 at-bats. On August 15 his two-run single off Whitey Ford gave Juan Pizarro a 2-1 win over the Yankees and ended Ford's 14-game winning streak. His White Sox card in the 1961 Topps set, number 509, comes from the sixth print series.

Camilo Garcia Carreon was born August 6, 1937, in Colton, California, the youngest of five children; his father had emigrated from Durango, Mexico, and spent thirty years at a Colton cement plant. A standout catcher at Colton Union High School, he signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1956 and hit over .300 at three minor league stops, including .311 for Triple-A Indianapolis in 1959, which earned him the American Association's outstanding rookie award. He debuted in the majors on the closing day of Chicago's pennant-winning 1959 season and stuck for good in 1961. Over eight seasons he batted .264 with 260 hits, 11 home runs and 114 RBIs, and he caught 320 games with only 13 errors for a .993 fielding mark. Torn tendons in his right arm in 1964 reduced the rest of his career to short stays with Cleveland and Baltimore, and he retired after the 1967 season to raise his family in Tucson, Arizona, where he later played a season for the Tucson Toros, coached them through 1972, and stayed in Little League and amateur men's baseball until his death in 1987 at age 50. Colton elected him to its hall of fame in 2006, the first Hispanic honoree.
