About Danny McDevitt

McDevitt's 1960 season was his quietest with the Dodgers: 24 games, only seven of them starts, and an 0-4 record across 53 innings. Los Angeles sold his contract to the Yankees on December 16, 1960, which is why this card lists him with New York. He got into just eight games for the Yankees, going 1-2 with a 7.62 ERA, before New York traded him to the Minnesota Twins for infielder Billy Gardner on June 14, 1961. Card 349 sits in the fourth print series; his rookie card came in the 1958 Topps set.

Daniel Eugene McDevitt was a left-handed pitcher born November 18, 1932, in Manhattan and raised in Hallstead, Pennsylvania, where he starred in high school. He was attending St. Bonaventure University when the Yankees signed him as an amateur free agent in September 1951; released the next year, he served in the Army during the Korean War and then worked his way up the Dodgers chain. He debuted with Brooklyn on June 17, 1957, and is best remembered for the complete-game 2-0 shutout he threw over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Dodgers' final game at Ebbets Field on September 24, 1957, a five-hitter with nine strikeouts in front of 6,702 fans. He pitched on through the club's move to Los Angeles, reaching a career-best 10-8 in 1959, when the Dodgers beat the White Sox in six games for the World Series title, though he did not appear in that Series. He finished with the Yankees and Twins in 1961 and the Kansas City Athletics in 1962, closing at 21-27 with a 4.40 ERA and 303 strikeouts in 155 games over six seasons. He later lived in Social Circle, Georgia, working in real estate, and died in Covington, Georgia, on November 20, 2010, two days after his 78th birthday.
