1961 Topps #326 Dave Hillman

About Dave Hillman
His 1961 Topps card, #326 in the fourth series, is a plain mid-set card. His rookie card dates to 1957. The Boston uniform traces to November 21, 1959, when the Cubs sent Hillman and first baseman Jim Marshall to the Red Sox for slugger Dick Gernert, the first trade completed under a new rule that briefly let the leagues trade without waivers. His 1960 was rough: a spring-training car wreck on March 10 cost him seven stitches and a badly bruised throwing shoulder, and in early July a Hoyt Wilhelm knuckleball tore the fingernail off his right index finger as he squared to bunt, putting him back on the disabled list at 0-3 in 15 games. He pitched just once more that year.
Dave Hillman, born Darius Dutton Hillman in Dungannon, Virginia, was a right-handed pitcher and the first big leaguer ever produced by that tiny southwestern Virginia town or its high school. He reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1955 after Air Force service and five seasons in the minors, and spent parts of five years in Chicago as a swingman who could start or relieve. He moved on to the Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and New York Mets to close out an eight-season career that ran through 1962, going 21-37 with a 3.87 ERA, 296 strikeouts, eight complete games, and one shutout in 188 games. His steadiest stretch came with the late-1950s Cubs, where sharp control -- more than two strikeouts per walk in both 1958 and 1959 -- kept his ERA respectable even when his won-lost record did not reflect it. After baseball he settled in Kingsport, Tennessee, and spent decades selling clothes at his uncle's store, retiring in 1990. He died in 2022 at 95, by then the oldest surviving Cincinnati Reds alumnus.
