1961 Topps #387 Duke Maas

About Duke Maas
Card #387 in the fifth series shows Maas with the Yankees, which took some doing. The expansion Los Angeles Angels used their third pick on him in the December 1960 draft - their first three all came from New York - then traded him back for infielder Fritz Brickell on April 4, 1961, before the season opened. He pitched once more, on April 23 against Baltimore, retiring one of the three batters he faced before a run-scoring triple by Brooks Robinson closed out his major-league career; an arthritic arm sent him to Richmond in May.
Duane Frederick "Duke" Maas was a right-handed pitcher from Utica, Michigan, who pitched seven seasons in the majors from 1955 to 1961 with the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics, and New York Yankees. He grew up doing chores on his father's 60-acre dairy farm and did not play organized ball until his senior year at Utica High School; his coach arranged a tryout at Briggs Stadium, and Detroit signed him in the fall of 1948. Maas won a spot in the Tigers' rotation out of spring training in 1955, went 0-7 in 1956, then came back with a 3.28 ERA and 10 wins over a career-high 219 1/3 innings in 1957 before a 13-player November trade sent him to Kansas City. The Athletics shipped him and Virgil Trucks to New York on June 15, 1958, for Harry Simpson and Bob Grim; Maas went 7-3 down the stretch, started and won the pennant-clincher, and relieved once in the World Series the Yankees took from Milwaukee. He was 14-8 as a swingman in 1959 and pitched two innings in the 1960 Series against Pittsburgh. Arthritis in his pitching arm finished him at 32; he retired 45-44 with a 4.19 earned run average and 356 strikeouts in 195 games.
