About Larry Osborne

Card #208 puts Osborne in the third series of the 1961 Topps set, with the Detroit Tigers. The season behind it was spent almost entirely on the bench: 71 games but only 93 at-bats, pinch-hitting duty in 53 of them, 11 games at first base and eight at third. He hit .215 with two home runs and 13 runs batted in, and 20 walks lifted his on-base mark to .354. First base belonged to Norm Cash, who batted .361 to win the American League title, and Detroit won 101 games yet finished second, eight behind the Yankees.

Larry Sidney Osborne, born October 12, 1935 in Chattahoochee, Georgia, played six seasons in the majors for the Detroit Tigers and Washington Senators between 1957 and 1963, mostly at first base and third base. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed, standing 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds. His father, Tiny Osborne, pitched in the majors in the 1920s. Larry graduated from West Fulton High School in Atlanta in 1953, passed up a football scholarship from Auburn and signed with Detroit that June. He appeared in five seasons for the Tigers and one for Washington, 359 games in all, batting .206 with 17 home runs and 86 runs batted in. His best professional season came in between: in 1960 he spent the full year with the Triple-A Denver Bears and won the American Association Triple Crown, hitting .342 with 34 home runs and tying teammate Steve Boros for the RBI lead at 119; he beat Carl Yastrzemski for the batting title by three points and was the writers' unanimous All-Star first baseman. After 1963 he played six more minor league seasons through 1969, then scouted for the San Francisco Giants out of Woodstock, Georgia. He died there on April 15, 2011, at 75. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member.
