1961 Topps #207 Dodger Southpaws - Sandy Koufax / Johnny Podres
On this card: Sandy Koufax, Johnny Podres

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The story on this card
Topps titled card 207 Dodger Southpaws and handed it to two men instead of one: Sandy Koufax and Johnny Podres. Southpaw is old ballpark shorthand for a left-hander, and Los Angeles ran a pair of them out of the same rotation, which is the whole hook. The 1961 set is full of these nicknamed pairings - Buc Hill Aces, Brother Battery - and this is the Dodgers' entry. Both pitchers also have solo cards in the set, Podres at #109 and Koufax at #344, so 207 is a bonus. It sits in the third series, an ordinary print run, but Koufax's name keeps it among the most chased cards in the set's middle.
Sandy Koufax was the Dodgers' left-hander nicknamed 'the Left Arm of God,' whose five-year run of dominance from 1962 to 1966 brought three unanimous Cy Young Awards and four no-hitters, including a perfect game, before an arthritic elbow forced his retirement at 30. Brooklyn's unlikeliest Game 7 starter, Podres shut out the Yankees 2-0 in 1955 for the only title the borough ever won and the first World Series MVP award, then pitched on to four rings, four All-Star teams and 148 wins.
