About Stan Williams

Williams turns up twice in 1961. Card 45 is a first-series League Leaders entry shared with Mike McCormick, Ernie Broglio, Don Drysdale, and Bob Friend, saluting the 1960 National League earned run average leaders; Williams belongs there on a 3.00 ERA and a 14-10 record built with 175 strikeouts against 72 walks. Card 190, issued in the second series, is his own Los Angeles Dodgers portrait and lands on a 15-12 season with a 3.90 ERA, the Dodgers' last summer in the Los Angeles Coliseum, when he walked more than 100 hitters.

Stanley Wilson Williams was a hard-throwing right-hander who pitched 14 major-league seasons, 1958 through 1972, for the Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Twins, Cardinals, and Red Sox. Born in Enfield, New Hampshire, on September 14, 1936, he was three when the family moved to Denver, and the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him out of East High School in 1954, when he was 17. He reached Los Angeles in May 1958 at 21. Listed at 6-foot-5, with a fastball he was happy to run inside, he answered to "Big Daddy" for his size and strength and to "the Big Hurt" for his habit of moving hitters off the plate. He was an All-Star in 1960, his only such season, and won a career-high 15 games in 1961, though walking more than 100 batters that year showed the command trouble that kept him out of the front rank. He finished 109-94 with a 3.48 ERA, 1,305 strikeouts, 42 saves, and 11 shutouts in 482 games, and he never allowed an earned run in postseason play. He won a World Series ring with the 1959 Dodgers and a second as pitching coach of the 1990 Reds, one of 14 coaching seasons across five clubs. Williams scouted into his 70s, entered the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, and died in 2021 at 84.
