1961 Topps #67 Ossie Virgil

About Ossie Virgil
Topps placed Virgil at #67 in the first series, in the Detroit cap he earned when the Giants traded him and Gail Harris to the Tigers on January 28, 1958 for Jim Finigan and $25,000. He did not finish 1961 in that uniform. After 20 games and a .133 mark in Detroit, he went to the Kansas City Athletics on August 2 along with Bill Fischer in exchange for Gerry Staley and Reno Bertoia, and added 11 more games there. The combined season came to 31 games and a .137 average on seven hits, spread over work at second base, third base, shortstop and catcher.
Osvaldo Jose Virgil Pichardo was born May 17, 1932 in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, grew up in the Bronx after his family emigrated, and became the first Dominican-born player in post-integration Major League Baseball when he debuted for the New York Giants on September 23, 1956. A right-handed hitter and thrower, he played every position except pitcher and center field, most often third base. Across nine seasons with the Giants in both New York and San Francisco, Detroit, Kansas City, Baltimore and Pittsburgh he batted .231 with 174 hits, 14 home runs and 73 RBI in 324 games. In 1958 he became the first black player to appear for the Tigers, one of the last clubs to integrate, a distinction usually noted with the caveat that he was more precisely their first Latino; in his Detroit home debut he went 5-for-5 to a standing ovation he said he never forgot. He then coached 19 seasons in the majors, working 1977 through 1988 as Dick Williams's third-base coach, including the pennant-winning 1984 San Diego Padres. His son Ozzie Virgil Jr. caught in all or parts of 11 big league seasons and was a two-time National League All-Star; father coached third base while son batted in the 1985 All-Star Game. Virgil died September 29, 2024 in Monte Cristi at 92.
