1961 Topps #66 Bill Henry

About Bill Henry
Card #66, from the 1961 set's first series, shows Henry in a Reds uniform, a year after he arrived from the Cubs and saved 17 games as Cincinnati's closer. He worked 47 games in 1961, all in relief, finished 32 and posted a staff-best 2.19 ERA; his 16 saves tied teammate Jim Brosnan for second in the National League. Cincinnati took its first pennant in 21 years, and he retired all three Yankees he faced in Game Four of the World Series, striking out Tony Kubek and Roger Maris.
Bill Henry was a left-handed relief pitcher from Alice, Texas, who starred in basketball and track at Pasadena High School, which fielded no baseball team, and did not pitch in organized baseball until he turned professional in 1948. Four minor league seasons brought him to the Boston Red Sox in 1952, and he spent four years with Boston, three of them split with the high minors, working mainly as a starter. The Red Sox traded him to the Chicago Cubs in January 1957, and after the Cubs converted him to relief he became a National League workhorse, tying teammate Don Elston for the league lead with 65 games pitched in 1959. A December 1959 trade sent him to Cincinnati for six productive seasons: an All-Star selection in 1960, 64 saves as a Red, and two appearances in the 1961 World Series. He moved to San Francisco in May 1965 and pitched until he was 41, closing a 16-year career with brief stops in Pittsburgh and Houston at 527 games, a 46-50 record, 90 saves and a 3.26 ERA. Quiet enough that teammates called him Gabby, he later worked the Houston docks as a longshoreman and entered his Pasadena school district's athletics hall of fame in 2012.
