1961 Topps #76 Harry Anderson

About Harry Anderson
Series-1 card #76 shows Anderson in a Cincinnati uniform, the club he had joined on June 15, 1960, when the Phillies shipped him, Wally Post and minor leaguer Fred Hopke to the Reds for Tony Gonzalez and Lee Walls. The bat never came with him: he hit .167 in 66 at-bats as a Red in 1960, and on May 10, 1961 Cincinnati optioned him to Indianapolis, five days after the pinch-hit single that closed his major league career. This is his only card across Topps' 1961-69 run.
Harry Walter Anderson, a left-handed hitting outfielder and first baseman from North East, Maryland, played for the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds from 1957 through 1961. The Phillies signed him out of West Chester State Teachers College in 1952 for a $40,000 bonus, and Phillies broadcaster Gene Kelly soon hung the Guys and Dolls nickname Harry the Horse on the 6-foot-3 slugger. He drew National League MVP votes as a rookie in 1957 and again in 1958, when he hit .301 with 23 home runs and 97 RBI and was voted the league's Sophomore of the Year by the Baseball Writers' Association. He also led the NL with 95 strikeouts in 1958 and remains the last player to lead a league in strikeouts with fewer than 100 in a full season. His bat cooled in 1959, and on June 15, 1960 the Phillies traded him, Wally Post and minor leaguer Fred Hopke to Cincinnati for Tony Gonzalez and Lee Walls. He hit .167 in 66 at-bats as a Red, was optioned to Indianapolis in May 1961 and never returned. Anderson finished with 419 hits, 60 home runs and a .264 average, was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in 1992, and died of a heart attack in 1998 at 66.
