The story on this card
Topps put Gus Bell, Vada Pinson, and Frank Robinson together on this Reds' Heavy Artillery combination card, saluting the trio as Cincinnati's most dangerous bats. Card #25 sits in the first print series. The 1960 season earned the title: Robinson hit .297 with 31 home runs and 83 RBIs in 139 games and led the majors in slugging, Pinson batted .287 in all 154 games with 187 hits, a league-best 37 doubles, 20 home runs, and 32 steals, and Bell, in his last year as an everyday outfielder, started 122 of the Reds' 154 games. All three played on the 1961 pennant winner, and Bell wore No. 25 for the Reds.
A four-time All-Star and the first of three big league generations of Bells, Gus Bell spent nine seasons in the Cincinnati outfield, drove in 100 runs four times, and closed out his career with the Mets and the Braves. Cincinnati's graceful center fielder and Frank Robinson's running mate, Vada Pinson was a four-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner who reached 200 hits four times and closed an 18-year career with 2,757 hits and 256 home runs. Frank Robinson - Cincinnati's 1961 National League MVP, then Baltimore's 1966 American League Triple Crown winner, MVP and World Series MVP after one of baseball's most lopsided trades; nicknamed "the Judge," he later became the majors' first Black manager.
