About Fred Hutchinson
Card #135 is Hutchinson's manager card in the 1961 set, a second-series issue. It landed in packs while the Reds were still being written off: Hutchinson had taken over in July 1959 and then watched the club sink to 67-87 and sixth place in 1960. Instead, with Bill DeWitt newly installed as general manager and Frank Robinson winning the MVP, Cincinnati went 93-61 and took the pennant by four games over the Dodgers, its first since 1940. Hutchinson was named Manager of the Year; the Yankees then beat the Reds in five World Series games.
Fred Hutchinson was a Seattle-born right-hander who reached the Detroit Tigers on May 2, 1939 as one of the most hyped prospects of his era, bought out of the Pacific Coast League after a 25-7 year for his hometown Seattle Rainiers. He lost four full seasons to Navy service in World War II, returned in 1946 to begin a run of six straight double-figure win seasons, including 18 in 1947 and 17 in 1950, and made the American League All-Star team in 1951. He finished 95-71 with a 3.73 ERA, and hit .263 as a left-handed swinger used often as a pinch-hitter. Detroit made him player-manager in July 1952; he later took the Seattle Rainiers to the 1955 Pacific Coast League pennant, led the St. Louis Cardinals to second place and The Sporting News Manager of the Year award in 1957, and was summoned to Cincinnati in mid-1959, guiding the Reds to the 1961 National League pennant. Lung cancer killed him in November 1964, weeks after he resigned. Cincinnati retired his No. 1, the first number the club ever retired, and elected him to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame; his surgeon brother created the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle in his memory.
