About Dick Stigman
Card 77 is a first-series Cleveland Indians card, and the gold trophy printed on the front is the Topps All-Star Rookie award: Topps named Stigman the left-handed pitcher on its 1960 all-rookie team, and the trophy always turned up a year after the season it honored. The 1960 summer behind it was an odd one. He was 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA through June 30 when Al Lopez picked him for the American League All-Star staff, and because two All-Star Games were played each year from 1959 through 1962 he was named to both squads without throwing a pitch in either. Arm trouble then cut 1961 down to 22 games, a 2-5 record and a career-low 48 strikeouts.
Richard Lewis Stigman, born January 24, 1936, in Nimrod, Minnesota, was a left-handed pitcher who spent seven major-league seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox between 1960 and 1966. Three days after he graduated from Sebeka High School in the spring of 1954, the Cleveland scout who had signed Bob Feller and Bob Lemon drove out to sign him, having watched the strapping teenager strike out 21 batters in a seven-inning perfect game. Stigman climbed the Indians' farm system behind a 17-9, 1.44 ERA season at Class D Vidalia in 1956, reached Cleveland in 1960 and was traded to his home-state Twins two years later. Minnesota got his best work, both as a starter and out of the bullpen, and he was on the roster when the Twins won the 1965 American League pennant. Over 235 big-league games he went 46-54 with a 4.03 ERA and 755 strikeouts. He became a Minneapolis-area businessman afterward, and a park in Nimrod called Stigman's Mound carries his name.
