1961 Topps #34 Wynn Hawkins

About Wynn Hawkins
Card 34 in the set, a first-series issue, so it turns up about as easily as any 1961 Topps common. The number carries a nice coincidence: 34 was the uniform number Hawkins wore in each of his three Cleveland seasons. The card follows his first big league year, 1960, when he went 4-4 with a 4.23 ERA in 15 games, nine of them starts. He beat Detroit 2-1 on April 26 for his first major league win, working the first 11 innings of a 12-inning game, and on June 17 he served up Ted Williams's 500th home run at Cleveland Stadium.
Wynn Firth Hawkins was a right-handed pitcher born February 20, 1936, in East Palestine, Ohio. A New Waterford High School star, he was signed by Cleveland as an amateur free agent in 1955 while at Baldwin-Wallace, where his professional contract barred him from the baseball team, so he played three seasons of basketball instead and was elected to the school's athletic hall of fame in 2003. Hawkins made his major league debut on April 22, 1960, the first New Waterford graduate to reach the majors, and pitched for the Indians through 1962, going 12-13 with a 4.17 ERA and one save in 48 games, 30 of them starts. He is best remembered for surrendering Ted Williams's 500th career home run on June 17, 1960. He later said he tore a tendon in his shoulder after joining a neighborhood snowball fight following a heavy snow, and that his career ended right as it was really starting; he pitched in the minors through 1964 without returning to the big leagues. Hawkins went on to scout for Cleveland, serve as the club's traveling secretary and sell season tickets. He died February 11, 2021, at his home in Canfield, Ohio. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
