About Vic Power

Card 255 lands in the third series of the 1961 Topps set, and it is the last one to show Vic Power in a Cleveland uniform. He had arrived from Kansas City in the 1958 deal that sent Roger Maris the other way, and he came into this card off a 1960 line of .288 with 10 home runs and 84 runs batted in over 147 games, good for an All-Star selection and a third consecutive Gold Glove. Power turned 33 before the 1961 season and answered with 34 doubles and a fourth straight Gold Glove before Cleveland traded him the next spring.

Victor Felipe Pellot Pove, who played as Vic Power, was a Puerto Rican first baseman born November 1, 1927, in Arecibo. He led the American Association in hitting at .349 in 1953 for the Yankees' Kansas City farm club, yet New York never promoted him; general manager George Weiss said he was not the Yankee type, and the club chose Elston Howard instead to integrate its roster. Traded to the Philadelphia Athletics in December 1953, Power became the first Puerto Rican to play for that franchise and spent his first spring training barred from his teammates' hotels and restaurants. Over twelve seasons with the Athletics, Indians, Twins, Angels and Phillies he won seven straight Gold Gloves, from the award's 1958 debut through 1964, and was an American League All-Star in four seasons. Power finished at .284 with 1,716 hits, 126 home runs, 658 runs batted in and only 247 strikeouts in 6,046 at-bats.
