1961 Topps #380 Minnie Minoso

About Minnie Minoso
Both 1961 cards ride his last big season. Minoso hit .311 in 1960 with 20 home runs, a league-best 184 hits and 105 RBIs, started both All-Star Games, won his third and final Gold Glove and finished fourth in the MVP vote. First-series card #42 is the American League batting leaders card: Pete Runnels took the title at .320, White Sox teammate Al Smith was second at .315, Minoso third, Bill Skowron fourth. Fifth-series #380 is his last Topps card made while he was Chicago's everyday left fielder.
Saturnino Orestes Armas Arrieta Minoso, known as Minnie and the Cuban Comet, came out of Perico, Cuba, played third base for the New York Cubans of the Negro National League, and signed with Cleveland in 1948. A three-team trade sent him to the Chicago White Sox on April 30, 1951; the next day he became the first Black player in franchise history, homering in his first Comiskey Park at-bat. He hit .326 that season, second in the AL, and was runner-up for Rookie of the Year. Minoso was an All-Star in seven seasons and a three-time Gold Glove left fielder, led the league in steals and triples three times each and in hits, doubles and total bases once apiece, the engine of the Go-Go White Sox. Crowding the plate cost him: he led the AL in times hit by pitch a record ten times and held the career mark from 1959 to 1985. After a second Cleveland stint and stops in St. Louis and Washington, he finished in Chicago in 1964, then made celebrated cameos in 1976 and 1980 that left him the second man to play in five decades. He died in March 2015; the Golden Days Era Committee voted him into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in December 2021, and he was inducted in 2022.
