About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1961 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps built #451 around the men behind Ernie Broglio's best year: the caption Power For Ernie puts the St. Louis right-hander with shortstop Daryl Spencer and first baseman Bill White, the two bats that backed his 21-9, 2.74 season in 1960. Those 21 wins tied Warren Spahn for the National League lead, and Spencer and White each hit 16 home runs for the third-place Cardinals, White adding a .283 average, 79 RBI and the first of his seven Gold Gloves at first base. The trio did not stay together - St. Louis traded Spencer to the Dodgers on May 30, 1961. Card #451 sits in the sixth series.

Ernie Broglio - right-hander who tied for the National League lead with 21 wins for the 1960 Cardinals, then became the pitcher St. Louis traded to the Cubs for a young Lou Brock in 1964. Daryl Spencer - a lanky, power-hitting infielder out of Wichita who held down shortstop for the Giants and Cardinals, hit the first home run in San Francisco Giants history, and then became a star for Japan's Hankyu Braves. Bill White - Slick-fielding, left-handed first baseman: seven straight Gold Gloves, eight-time All-Star, a 1964 World Series ring with St. Louis, then 18 years in the Yankees booth and a run as the first Black president of a major sports league.
