1961 Topps #391 Winston Brown

About Winston Brown
Card #391 sits in the fifth series of a 587-card set Topps issued in seven waves - the scarce run is series seven, #523 and up. It is a plain closeup portrait, Brown's only card across Topps' 1961-1969 sets, and collectors count it as his rookie card. Topps listed him with the Chicago White Sox, an odd line for a pitcher coming off two seasons at Sacramento, the Milwaukee Braves' Pacific Coast League club, where he went 12-14 with a 3.36 ERA over 225 innings in 1960. He opened 1961 back in the Braves system at Louisville and never pitched an inning in the majors for Chicago or anyone else.
Winston Alfaro Brown was a right-handed pitcher, listed at 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, born September 17, 1932, in Almirante, Bocas del Toro, Panama. He broke into organized ball in 1953 with the Fort Lauderdale Lions of the Class B Florida International League, going 18-8 with a 2.78 ERA over 217 innings. The next four summers scattered him across Class B, Class A and Class C stops - Miami Beach, Portsmouth, Corpus Christi, Evansville, Jacksonville and Boise - with 1956 missing from his record entirely. He reached Double-A at Austin in 1958 (17-10), then spent 1959 and 1960 as a workhorse starter for the Sacramento Solons, the Milwaukee Braves' Pacific Coast League club. He stayed in the Braves chain at Louisville in 1961 and split 1962 between Louisville and the Hawaii Islanders, the relocated Sacramento franchise. From 1963 through 1970 he pitched for the Poza Rica Petroleros of the Mexican League. Brown never appeared in a major league game. His professional ledger across seventeen seasons: 153-143, 3.76 ERA, 518 games with 336 starts, plus scattered duty at first base and in the outfield.
