About Yogi Berra
Card #425 is his fifth-series base issue, while #472 is a sixth-series card from the MVP run, captioned for all three of his American League Most Valuable Player awards, 1951, 1954 and 1955. Behind them is 1960:.276 with 15 home runs and 62 RBI, only 63 of his 120 games behind the plate, then a World Series Game Seven homer in Pittsburgh before Bill Mazeroski's ninth-inning drive cleared Berra's head in left.
Lawrence Peter Berra grew up on The Hill, the Italian neighborhood of St. Louis, and quit school after the eighth grade. Friends started calling him Yogi after a movie about India, deciding he sat with his arms and legs crossed waiting to bat just like the yogi on the screen. He signed with the Yankees for the $500 bonus the Cardinals would not pay him, spent 1943 at Norfolk, then joined the Navy and fired rockets and machine guns from a six-man boat off Omaha Beach on D-Day, earning a Purple Heart. He debuted on September 22, 1946, and gave New York 18 seasons, most of them behind the plate, retiring after 1963 with a .285 average, 2,150 hits, 358 home runs and 1,430 RBI. He was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1954 and 1955, was picked for 18 All-Star Games, caught Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, and played on ten world champions, more than any other player in history. He later managed the Yankees to the 1964 pennant and the Mets to the 1973 pennant, the second manager after Joe McCarthy to win one in each league. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972, he stayed as famous for his Yogi-isms as for his bat, and died in 2015 at 90.
