The story on this card

Card 57 is the American League wins board in the 1962 Topps League Leaders run, a ten-card first-series block that opens at #51. Whitey Ford led the league at 25-4 for the 109-53 Yankees, and the 25 wins carried him to the Cy Young Award, then still a single honor covering both leagues. Frank Lary was second at 23-9, a career best for the 101-61 Tigers, who finished eight games behind New York. Steve Barber went 18-12 for third-place Baltimore and tied for the league lead with eight shutouts. Lary's teammate Jim Bunning closed the board at 17-11, and Ralph Terry's 16 wins were the next line down.

Whitey Ford was the New York Yankees' calm, curveball-first ace, the Chairman of the Board who won 236 games, three American League wins titles, the 1961 Cy Young Award and the career World Series pitching records across eleven pennant seasons. Frank Lary - Detroit right-hander they called the Yankee Killer, 27-10 against New York from 1955 through 1961. Three-time All-Star, 1961 Gold Glove winner, and a 23-9 ace for the 101-win Tigers that same summer. Steve Barber was Baltimore's hard-throwing lefty ace of the early 1960s, a two-time All-Star who tied for the American League shutout lead in 1961 and won 20 games in 1963 before elbow trouble shortened his career. Jim Bunning was a hard-throwing right-hander who threw no-hitters in both leagues, including a 1964 perfect game for the Phillies, and later served as a US Senator from Kentucky.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
