About this card

The story on this card
The 1961 National League wins race ended in a dead heat, and Topps put all three principals on one card. Joey Jay, acquired from Milwaukee the previous December for Roy McMillan, went 21-10 with 14 complete games and tied for the league shutout lead with four as the Reds climbed from 67 wins in 1960 to a 93-61 pennant, four games clear of the Dodgers. Warren Spahn matched him at 21-13 for the fourth-place Braves, a fifth straight year leading or sharing the league lead in wins, and at 40 he also took the ERA title at 3.02. Jim O'Toole filled the third slot at 19-9, his 3.10 ERA second only to Spahn's. Number 58 sits in the League Leaders subset of the first series.
Warren Spahn - the winningest left-handed pitcher in baseball history, a Braves ace who won 20 games in 13 different seasons, threw no-hitters at 39 and 40, and was still going 23-7 at age 42. Joey Jay, the first Little Leaguer to reach the majors and one of the original bonus babies, blossomed after a trade to Cincinnati and won 21 games in both 1961 and 1962, pitching the Reds to a pennant. Jim O'Toole was Cincinnati's left-handed workhorse of the early 1960s, a 19-game winner in the Reds' 1961 pennant season who started twice against Whitey Ford in that World Series and started the 1963 All-Star Game for the National League.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
