1962 Topps #458 Bob Buhl
Card #458 comes in two collectible states, both naming him a Cub: 458b shows the M of his old Milwaukee cap still in place, the error printing, and 458a shows a plain cap, the corrected printing.

About Bob Buhl
The 1962 set catches Buhl mid-move. The card reports a 9-10 season with a 4.11 ERA over 188.1 innings, his last full year in Milwaukee, and it was a sour one at the end: late in the schedule Birdie Tebbetts replaced Chuck Dressen for the final 25 games and dropped the slumping right-hander deep into the bullpen, where he worked three times the rest of the way. Insulted by that and by a proposed pay cut, Buhl knew his days there were numbered, and on April 30, 1962 the Braves traded him to Chicago for young pitcher Jack Curtis. Card #458 is a sixth-series issue that already lists him with the Cubs, and it comes in two collectible states.
Bob Buhl signed with the Chicago White Sox out of a 1946 tryout camp in his hometown of Saginaw, Michigan, but Commissioner Happy Chandler granted him free agency in February 1948 because the deal came before he had graduated from high school, and he signed with the Boston Braves organization instead. Army paratrooper duty in 1951-52 delayed him further; he debuted on April 17, 1953. Over fifteen seasons he went 166-132 with a 3.55 ERA in 2,587 innings for the Braves (1953-1962), Chicago Cubs (1962-1966) and Philadelphia Phillies (1966-1967). He won 18 games in 1956 and 18 again in 1957, when his .720 winning percentage led the National League and Milwaukee won the only World Series title of its Braves era. He earned the nickname Dodger Killer by beating Brooklyn in five straight starts in 1956. At the plate he was hopeless: no home runs in 857 career at-bats and a .089 average. He settled in Mio, Michigan, coached high school ball at Hillman in the 1970s, and died in Titusville, Florida on February 16, 2001.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation; slabs whose label names no variation are listed as not designated. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
