1962 Topps #98 Checklist 89-176

About this card
The seven checklist cards (#22, 98, 192, 277, 367, 441, 516) list the set in 88-card blocks - 1-88, 89-176, 177-264, 265-352, 353-429, 430-506, 507-598 - that lag the real print series, which is why the high numbers are sometimes wrongly said to start at #507. Four of them exist in more than one state: #22 with a correct or an error back, #192 with and without a comma (and tinted), #441 in large or small print and #516 with white or yellow boxes.
The story on this card
Card 98 is the 1962 Topps set's second checklist, printed in the first series. Its list runs from number 89 through 176, reaching past the first series and on into the second. Unlike the checklists at 22, 192, 441 and 516, this one has no printing states for collectors to separate - one version is all there is, though checklist 22 itself turns up with an error back listing 121-176, numbers that belong inside this card's range. The chase here is condition: kids checked these off in pen and pencil, so clean unmarked copies in high grade are the scarce ones, and set builders bid them up.
Graded population (PSA & SGC)
| Grader | Total | 10 | 9 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 1-4 | Auth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PSA | 444 | 0 | 44 | 210 | 116 | 37 | 16 | 20 | 1 |
| SGC | 38 | 0 | 0 | 9 | 10 | 7 | 8 | 4 | 0 |
Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1962 Topps #98 card?
It is card #98 of the 600-card 1962 Topps Baseball set, Checklist 89-176. Does #98 have a green-tint version?
No. Although it lists cards 89-176, the #98 checklist was printed in the first series, outside the #110-196 run that carries the green tints, and no catalogue registers a tint for it.
How many cards are in the 1962 Topps Baseball set?
600 cards, tracked as 708 collectible states. The numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps, but three different cards were printed #139 - two Hal Reniff poses, catalogued 139a and 139b, and the Babe Hits 60 Babe Ruth Special, 139c - so 598 numbers make 600 cards; 93 cards carry catalogued print variations, the series-2 green tints among them, that the master set counts separately.
