About Ed Hobaugh

Hobaugh's 1962 Topps card, #79, is a Senators issue from the set's first series. Washington opened him in the bullpen that spring, and a 5.52 ERA on June 2, against a league average of 3.97, sent him down to Syracuse. Ten good outings there earned a quick recall, and his August work convinced manager Mickey Vernon to give him two straight starts, though he failed to finish the fourth inning in either. Back in relief he was excellent, 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA over 16 appearances, and closed the year 2-1, 3.76 in 26 games.

Edward Russell Hobaugh, born June 27, 1934 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, was a bespectacled right-handed power pitcher who made his name at Michigan State. He went 4-0 as a sophomore on the 1954 Spartans club that finished third in the College World Series, earned Big Ten All-Conference honors, captained the 1956 team, and left East Lansing with a 15-8 record and a then-school-record 155 strikeouts. The Chicago White Sox signed him in 1956 for a $4,000 bonus, and in his fourth professional start, for Waterloo of the Class B Three-I League, he threw a no-hitter. Two years in the United States Army followed, then Triple-A seasons at Indianapolis and San Diego. The new Washington Senators took him in the December 1960 expansion draft, and he pitched for Washington from 1961 through 1963 as both starter and reliever, going 9-10 with a 4.34 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 61 games. He spent six more years in the high minors with Senators, White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates affiliates, retired from the mound in 1969, and managed briefly in the Pirates system before going home to Armstrong County to teach and coach.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
