About Ron Fairly

The 1961 season behind this card was Fairly's breakout: .322 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI in 111 games. He began the year as a pinch hitter, then got his opening in June when Gil Hodges' thumb went bad and Walter Alston asked whether he could play first base. Fairly said yes, took the position that day in San Francisco with Roger Craig on the mound, and went five games before a ground ball found him. First base was his from there. Card #375 sits mid-set in the fifth series.

Ronald Ray Fairly was born July 12, 1938 in Macon, Georgia, and grew up in Long Beach, California. He played center field for Rod Dedeaux's USC Trojans in their 1958 College World Series title season, then signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a $75,000 bonus offered through scout Harold "Lefty" Phillips, less money than the White Sox dangled but a chance to stay home. He debuted September 9, 1958 and stayed a Dodger for twelve seasons, learning right field from Carl Furillo and later taking Furillo's number six as a tribute. He hit left-handed with a short, compact swing. Fairly won World Series rings in 1959, 1963 and 1965 and lost a fourth Series in 1966, then went to the expansion Montreal Expos in a 1969 trade and revived his bat there, making All-Star teams for Montreal in 1973 and Toronto in 1977, the only player to represent both Canadian clubs. He also played for St. Louis, Oakland and California, finishing in 1978 with 2,442 games, 1,913 hits, 215 home runs, 1,044 RBI and a .266 average, the second man after Stan Musial with 1,000-plus games in both the outfield and the infield. He broadcast baseball from 1979 to 2006 and died October 30, 2019.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
