About Tim Harkness

Card #404 catches Harkness in Los Angeles flannels, a fifth-series card, and it is his recognized rookie card. A 4-for-8 September call-up in 1961 had earned him a place on the 1962 Dodgers, but the work was thin: 92 games and only 62 at-bats, with 36 of his appearances as a pinch hitter and most of his first-base time late in games. He made the swings count, batting .258 with a .370 on-base mark, 16 hits, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI. The first of those homers came April 17 at Candlestick Park off Mike McCormick, scoring Daryl Spencer in an 8-7 win over the Giants.

Thomas William Harkness, known as Tim, was a Canadian first baseman from Lachine, Quebec, born December 23, 1937 and signed off the Montreal sandlots by the Philadelphia Phillies before the 1956 season. In April 1957 the Phillies sent him to the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in the package that also carried Elmer Valo and Ron Negray east in exchange for Chico Fernandez. A left-handed hitter and thrower listed at 6 feet 2 inches, he reached Los Angeles on September 12, 1961 and went 4-for-8 in a five-game look. After the 1962 season the Dodgers traded him to the expansion New York Mets, and 1963 gave him the only full year he would spend as a regular. He closed with 259 games, 132 hits, 18 doubles, 14 home runs, 61 RBI and a .235 average, then played Triple-A ball through 1966. Back in Canada he managed, scouted for the San Diego Padres and took the Canadian Baseball Network Scout of the Year award in 1996. He died in Courtice, Ontario in 2025 at 87.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
