1963 Topps #323 Bill Mazeroski

About Bill Mazeroski
Topps gave Mazeroski a single card in 1963, fourth-series #323, and it covers one of his better offensive years: .271 in 1962 with 14 home runs, 81 RBI and a career-high nine triples for a Pirates club that won 93 games and finished fourth. He played in both All-Star Games that summer, the last time the majors staged two in one season. Oddly, 1962 was also the only year between 1960 and 1967 in which he did not win a Gold Glove, though he still turned 138 double plays. Card #323 is a regular-series issue.
William Stanley Mazeroski spent his entire 17-year career (1956-1972) at second base for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who signed him in 1954 out of high school in Tiltonsville, Ohio. Broadcaster Bob Prince took to calling him simply "The Glove," and the name fit: a ten-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner, he turned 1,706 double plays, still the major league career record for a second baseman. He is remembered above all for one swing. Leading off the bottom of the ninth of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series with the score tied 9-9, he drove a Ralph Terry pitch over the left-field wall at Forbes Field to beat the New York Yankees, the only walk-off home run ever to end a World Series in Game 7. He hit .320 in that Series and won the Babe Ruth Award for it. Eleven years later he and Roberto Clemente, the last two men left from the 1960 club, took a second title from Baltimore. Mazeroski coached for the Pirates and the Seattle Mariners, saw his number 9 retired in 1987, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2001, chosen for his glove more than his bat. He died February 20, 2026, in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, at 89.
