1963 Topps #259 Johnny Logan

About Johnny Logan
Number 259 sits in the third series, a straight-run card. It reports Logan's 1962 season, his first full year in Pittsburgh and a spare-parts one: 44 games, 80 at-bats, 24 hits and a .300 average, a tidy line in a small sample for a 93-68 Pirates club that finished fourth. He was 36 by then and no longer an everyday shortstop. One more season followed, 81 games and a .232 average in 1963 with a last appearance on September 27, before the Pirates released him.
Johnny Logan was born in Endicott, New York, on March 23, 1926, a five-sport star at Union-Endicott High School who was signed for the Boston Braves organization by scout Dewey Griggs. He reached the Braves in 1951, took over at shortstop for good in 1952, and moved with the franchise to Milwaukee in 1953. A four-time All-Star in 1955, 1957, 1958 and 1959, he had his best year in 1955, playing all 154 games, batting .297 and tying Hank Aaron for the National League lead with 37 doubles. He hit the first home run of the 1957 World Series, in a Game Two win over the Yankees, and doubled home the tying run in the tenth inning of Game Four before scoring on Eddie Mathews' game-winning homer. Traded to Pittsburgh on June 15, 1961 for Gino Cimoli, he closed a 13-season major league career in 1963 at .268 with 93 home runs and 547 RBI. One season in Japan with the 1964 Nankai Hawks made him the first player to win both a World Series and a Japan Series.
