The story on this card
Card #299 is Morehead's Topps debut and his recognized rookie card, a series-4 Rookie Stars panel he shares with Bob Dustal, Dan Schneider and Tom Butters. Behind it sits 1962 at Triple-A Seattle, where he went 10-9 with a 3.72 ERA and 159 strikeouts in 26 starts for Johnny Pesky's Rainiers, and Pesky came east with him, taking over as Boston's manager for 1963. A 4-8 season with a 4.80 ERA at Class-A Johnstown in 1961 was all the professional work before that. Dave Morehead was a hard-throwing Red Sox right-hander who no-hit Cleveland at Fenway Park on September 16, 1965, the last no-hitter by a Boston pitcher until 2001, before a shoulder injury and the 1968 expansion draft sent him to Kansas City.
Dustal's only Topps card is a fourth-series Rookie Stars panel, card #299, shared with Dave Morehead, Dan Schneider and Tom Butters and representing the Red Sox, Tigers, Braves and Pirates. It is his recognized rookie card, issued the same spring he reached the majors with Detroit. Dustal pitched exclusively in relief for the 1963 Tigers, debuting April 9 and making his last big-league appearance May 2, working six innings over seven games with an 0-1 record and a 9.00 ERA; his only decision came in a 15-inning loss to Boston at Fenway Park. A right-handed reliever from Sayreville, New Jersey, who logged 116 minor league wins across 14 seasons in the Tigers system before a brief 1963 stint in Detroit's bullpen.
Schneider reached the majors on May 12, 1963, less than a year after signing, and he was still 20 years old the day he first pitched for Milwaukee. He worked 30 games as a rookie, three of them starts, going 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 43 2/3 innings - the lowest single-season ERA he would ever post in the big leagues. Topps gave him card 299, a four-player Rookie Stars panel in the fourth print series that puts him alongside Dave Morehead, Bob Dustal and Tom Butters and spans four clubs: Boston, Detroit, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. Tucson-raised left-hander and first-team Arizona All-American who relieved for the Braves and Astros across five scattered seasons from 1963 to 1969, then went home and helped bring spring training back to Tucson.
Butters spent most of 1963 at Triple-A Columbus, going 6-5 with a 2.69 ERA, and was back in Pittsburgh for six September outings that left him without a decision for the second straight autumn. Topps put him on card #299, a fourth-series Rookie Stars issue that crosses four organizations: Dave Morehead of the Red Sox, Bob Dustal of the Tigers, Dan Schneider of the Braves, and Butters for the Pirates. It is a genuine rookie card of his, and despite sitting near the 300 mark. Dustal's whole major-league life, seven games that April and May, was already over by the time the card reached collectors. A Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander whose brief 1960s career was cut short by a car-accident whiplash injury; he went on to build Duke athletics as its longtime AD, hiring coach Mike Krzyzewski along the way.
