1963 Topps #46 Tommie Aaron

About Tommie Aaron
Number 46 is Tommie Aaron's rookie card, a first-series issue in the 1963 set. Behind it sits a 1962 debut that was easily the busiest year of his career: 141 games for Milwaukee, 334 at-bats, a .231 average, 20 doubles, 38 RBI and eight home runs, more than half his career total of 13. Two of those homers made news because Hank hit one the same day. On June 12, 1962, the brothers went deep in the same game for the first time, and on July 12 they did it in the same inning, something no pair had managed since Lloyd and Paul Waner in 1938.
Tommie Lee Aaron was born August 5, 1939, in Mobile, Alabama, and signed with the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent on May 28, 1958, at eighteen. A right-handed hitter and thrower who split his time between first base and left field, he was the younger brother of Hank Aaron; their 768 combined home runs remain the major-league record for a pair of brothers, though Hank hit 755 of them. Tommie reached the majors on April 10, 1962, and spent the next decade shuttling between the Braves and the minors, winning International League Most Valuable Player honors with Richmond in 1967. Over seven big-league seasons he batted .229 with 13 home runs, 94 RBI and 102 runs in 437 games, and drew praise for his glove work at first base, where he finished at .990. He managed in the Braves farm system through the 1970s, joined the Atlanta coaching staff in 1979, and was still on it when he died of leukemia in Atlanta on August 16, 1984, eleven days past his 45th birthday. Richmond later named its team MVP award for him, and the franchise's Triple-A club, now the Gwinnett Stripers, retired his number 23.
