1963 Topps #47 Don Lock

About Don Lock
Card #47, a first-series issue, is Lock's Topps rookie card. It reports his 1962 debut season: 71 games for Washington after a July 11 trade that sent first baseman Dale Long to the Yankees, batting .253 with 12 home runs and 37 RBI. He had been hitting .194 at Triple-A Richmond when the Yankees moved him, then homered off Chicago's Juan Pizarro on July 17 to win the opener of a doubleheader 1-0 in his first big-league game.
Don Wilson Lock, born July 27, 1936, in Wichita, Kansas, played eight major league seasons, 1962 through 1969, as an outfielder for the Washington Senators, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox. A basketball scholarship athlete at Wichita State, he signed with the Yankees in March 1958 for a $12,500 bonus, then led the Carolina League in home runs and RBI with Greensboro in 1959 and the Eastern League in both with Binghamton in 1960. Washington acquired him out of New York's farm system in July 1962 for first baseman Dale Long, and he grew into the Senators' center fielder and their biggest power source. He moved to Philadelphia for 1967 and to Boston for a last half-season in 1969, finishing with a .238 average, 122 home runs and 373 RBI in 921 games. Lock later managed in the minors from 1971 into 1973, farmed the family land in Kansas, and was inducted into the Wichita State basketball and baseball halls of fame, the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame before his death in Wichita on October 8, 2017.
