About Jim Hannan

Washington had no Triple-A club of its own in 1963, so Hannan rode shared affiliates: Richmond from May into July, then the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he reeled off six straight wins, one of them a complete-game one-hitter. He went 10-6 between the two stops and earned a September ticket back to the capital, making two starts and two relief appearances. His 1963 Topps card, #121, is his rookie card, a second-series base card with the Senators.

James John Hannan was a right-handed pitcher from Jersey City, New Jersey, who reached the majors with the expansion Washington Senators in 1962, a few months after Washington used the first pick of the November 1961 first-year player draft to take him out of the Boston Red Sox system. A Notre Dame graduate with a heavy sinking fastball and a hard slider, he spent nine of his ten big-league seasons with Washington, moving between the rotation and the bullpen, and finished 41-48 with a 3.88 ERA in 276 games before closing out 1971 with the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers. His best year came in 1968, when he went 10-6 with a 3.01 ERA under manager Jim Lemon. He took a master's degree in finance and investments from New York University in 1965, and the thesis he wrote there on the game's pension plan helped the Players Association cut the service time needed to qualify from five years to four. He later worked as a financial adviser and, in 1982, co-founded the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, serving as its first president.
