1963 Topps #276 Barry Shetrone

About Barry Shetrone
Traded from the Orioles to the Washington Senators in December 1962, Shetrone opened 1963 as part of Washington's outfield picture after four seasons in Baltimore. He went hitless in his brief look with the Senators that spring, playing his final big-league games in May and June before finishing the year and his pro career in the minors. Card 276 in Topps' 1963 series 3 print run pictures him as a Senator.
Barry Shetrone was a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Baltimore, Maryland, who signed with his hometown Orioles as an amateur free agent before the 1956 season. A 1956 high school basketball All-American at Southern High School, he spent three and a half years in Baltimore's farm system and led the Class C Arizona-Mexico League in hits and runs scored in 1957, batting .371. Recalled by the Orioles in mid-1959, he collected his first big-league hit off future Hall of Famer Jim Bunning in his first game. Shetrone played parts of four seasons with Baltimore between 1959 and 1962, all 23 of his career hits coming in an Orioles uniform, including two doubles, a triple, and a solo home run off Cleveland's Dave Tyriver in September 1962. Traded to the Washington Senators in December 1962, he closed out his major league career there in 1963 before returning to the minors, retiring in 1967 after 12 professional seasons. He finished with a .205 career batting average.
