About Dave Stenhouse

Card #263 lands in Topps' third series and shows Stenhouse in a Washington Senators cap a year after his All-Star summer. The back could only report what he had already done, since the season this card was sold into was still ahead of him. That 1963 campaign went the other way: 16 appearances, every one of them a start, a 3-9 record and a 4.55 ERA, with his workload falling from 197 innings to 87. His rookie card had come a year earlier, so this is simply his second Topps issue.

Dave Stenhouse was a right-handed pitcher born September 12, 1933, in Westerly, Rhode Island. A basketball and baseball standout at the University of Rhode Island, he signed with the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in June 1955, was taken out of the Cubs chain by Cincinnati in the December 1958 minor league draft, and climbed through Lafayette, Seattle and Jersey City. On December 15, 1961, Cincinnati traded him and catcher Bob Schmidt to the Washington Senators for Johnny Klippstein and Marty Keough. He debuted April 18, 1962, at 28, and went 11-12 with a 3.65 ERA over 197 innings as a rookie, earning a place on the American League All-Star squad in a summer when the majors staged two All-Star Games. He started the second of them, July 30 at Wrigley Field, and is credited as the first rookie to start a major league All-Star Game. His last big league game came October 4, 1964, and he finished 16-28 with a 4.14 ERA and 214 strikeouts in 76 games. He later coached at Rhode Island College and Brown University, and belongs to the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, not the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He died November 11, 2023.
