About Lee Maye

Maye played regularly against right-handed pitching in 1963, splitting the outfield between center and left for the Braves. The strike zone had just been enlarged, and he improved at the plate anyway: 124 games, 442 at-bats, a .271 average, 11 home runs, and 40 extra-base hits, 22 of them doubles. A back injury on September 8 ended his season early. He spent that winter resting and working in the Braves ticket office. Card 109 is an early first-series number.

Arthur Lee Maye was an outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons between 1959 and 1971, most of them with the Milwaukee Braves, followed by the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Los Angeles, he made the All-City team at Jefferson High School and signed with the Braves out of school in June 1954. He batted left, threw right, and was one of the fastest men in the game, timed under ten seconds in the 100-yard dash and successful on 38 of 44 stolen base attempts from 1960 through 1963. He won the Braves' left field job in 1961 and had his best year in 1964, when he led the National League with 44 doubles and batted .304. Shoulder, knee, and back injuries and a 1962 respiratory illness kept interrupting him. Away from the park he was a working rhythm and blues singer under his full name, leading the Los Angeles doo-wop group Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and recording as a solo act for decades. He finished at .274 with 94 home runs and 419 runs batted in, and died in Riverside, California, in 2002.
