1963 Topps #52 Chuck Schilling

About Chuck Schilling
The 1963 card, #52, is a first-series issue, and it pictures Boston's settled second baseman. He kept the job all year: Felix Mantilla, brought in that winter for his bat, made only a handful of starts at the position. Schilling was batting .311 on June 1 and looked fully recovered, then faded to .234 across 146 games with 33 runs batted in and 63 runs scored. His glove held up, repeating the .985 fielding percentage he had posted the year before. He also collected his Manhattan College degree that June, in absentia.
Charles Thomas Schilling (born October 25, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York) was a right-handed second baseman who spent all five of his major-league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, 1961 through 1965. Raised on Long Island, he graduated from St. Mary's High School in Manhasset in 1955 and signed with Boston while at Manhattan College, where he studied mechanical engineering. After a full 1960 season at Triple-A Minneapolis he reached the majors in 1961 with his friend and fellow Long Islander Carl Yastrzemski, and his glove was good enough that the Red Sox moved incumbent American League batting champion Pete Runnels off second base to make room. Prized for slick, dependable fielding rather than power, Schilling saw his bat undercut by a pitch that broke his left hand in his second season, and he closed his career with a .239 average, 470 hits, 23 home runs and 146 runs batted in over 541 games. He later taught secondary-school mathematics on Long Island for 24 years and died on March 30, 2021.
