1963 Topps #96 Lou Clinton

About Lou Clinton
Clinton appears early in 1963 Topps at #96, a first series card, and he is once more in a Boston Red Sox uniform. The season behind it was the best of his career. Back in the majors for good, he was the club's regular right fielder in 114 games, batted .294 with 18 home runs and 75 runs batted in, and finished third on the team in average, two points behind Carl Yastrzemski. The high point came on July 13, 1962 in Kansas City, where he hit for the cycle, went 5-for-7 and drove in the winning run in a 15-inning Red Sox victory.
Luciean Louis Clinton, an Oklahoma-born outfielder who batted and threw right-handed, spent parts of eight major league seasons (1960-1967) with five American League clubs: the Boston Red Sox, the Los Angeles and California Angels, the Kansas City Athletics, the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. Signed by Boston as an amateur free agent in 1955, straight out of Ponca City High School in Oklahoma, he debuted on April 22, 1960 and went on to play right field in 603 of his 691 career games. His best year came in 1962, when he hit for the cycle against Kansas City and set a career high with a .294 batting average, though his peak home run total came a year later. Across eight seasons he batted .247 with 65 home runs and 269 RBIs. The Yankees sold his contract to Philadelphia in May 1967 and he finished that year at Triple-A San Diego, then retired to run an oil business in Wichita, Kansas, where he also became an outstanding amateur golfer and a regular contender in local and state tournaments. The Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame elected him in its class of 1987, and he died in Wichita in 1997 at the age of 60.
