About Ike Delock

Card 136 comes from the second series of the 1963 Topps set, and it is Delock's last Topps card of the decade. He was the longest-tenured man on the Red Sox roster by then, but after six starts and a 1-2 record with a 4.50 ERA he fell out with rookie manager Johnny Pesky over a sore arm. Boston released him on June 9 and Baltimore signed him the same day. His first Orioles start, June 16, came against his old club, and he lost it. He pitched for the last time on July 13, and the Orioles released him six days later: 1-3, 5.04 in seven games.

Ivan Martin "Ike" Delock, born November 11, 1929 in Highland Park, Michigan, was a right-handed pitcher whose eleven big-league seasons were spent with the Boston Red Sox apart from a final month with the Baltimore Orioles. A Marine Corps veteran who learned to pitch on service teams, he signed with Boston in 1948 and climbed through Auburn, Oneonta, Roanoke and Scranton, where he went 20-4 with a 1.92 ERA in 1951, before debuting in April 1952. Boston used him as both a starter and a bullpen workhorse, and his best two pitches were a fastball and a slider. He led the American League with eleven relief wins in 1956, won fourteen games in 1958 behind a thirteen-game winning streak carried over from 1957, and had his finest year in 1959 at 11-6 with a 2.95 ERA. He finished 84-75 with a 4.03 ERA, 672 strikeouts, 32 complete games and 31 saves in 329 games, 147 of them starts, ranking among the top 25 Red Sox pitchers in wins, games, saves, innings and strikeouts. Afterward he lent his name to a Connecticut sports camp and worked in airline sales. He died February 28, 2022 in Raleigh, North Carolina, at 92, and is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.
