About Joe Moeller

Moeller's rookie card, 1963 Topps #53, is a series-1 issue that followed his first year in the majors. He debuted in relief against Cincinnati on April 12, 1962 as the National League's youngest player, then took the ball six days later and became, at 19 years and two months, the youngest starting pitcher in franchise history. Control undid him: 6-5 with a 5.25 ERA, 58 walks against 46 strikeouts and nine wild pitches in 85.2 innings, and an option to Omaha on July 29.

Joe Moeller was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major-league career, 1962 through 1971, with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The club signed him out of Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach in June 1960, after his father negotiated a combined $100,000 bonus for Joe and his brother Gary with owner Walter O'Malley; Joe's share was around $75,000. At 6-foot-5 he drew comparisons to Don Drysdale for his build and pitching style. Injury kept undoing him: arm trouble, a separated and then dislocated left shoulder, back and groin problems, and an estimated 60 cortisone shots in fewer than 600 big-league innings. Two seasons, 1963 and 1965, brought him no major-league work at all. He finished 26-36 with a 4.01 ERA and 307 strikeouts in 166 games across eight seasons, then earned a physical education degree in 1977, coached for Cleveland and at USC, spent more than a decade in the Dodgers' public affairs bureau, and scouted for the Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins.
