About this card

This is one of the eleven combination cards in the 1963 Topps set (#18, 43, 68, 138, 173, 218, 242, 306, 331, 392, 412), each pairing two or three players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps built card 68 of its 1963 set around an old Brooklyn friendship split across two dugouts: Duke Snider, still in Dodger blue, next to Gil Hodges, by then a New York Met. The two had anchored the Boys of Summer clubs together, so Friendly Foes fits a pair who spent years in the same lineup and now lined up on opposite sides. The Mets had claimed Hodges off the Los Angeles list in the 1961 expansion draft. The split did not last: Los Angeles sold Snider to New York on April 1, 1963, making them teammates again for a few weeks before Hodges played his last big league game on May 5.

Duke Snider - Brooklyn's center fielder and the Duke of Flatbush: five straight 40-homer seasons, eight All-Star teams, the only man with four home runs in two different World Series, and rings with the 1955 and 1959 Dodgers. Gil Hodges anchored the Dodgers' 1950s infield as an eight-time All-Star first baseman, then managed the 1969 'Miracle Mets' to a World Series title before his sudden death in 1972.
