The story on this card
Card 43 in the 1963 Topps set pairs Casey Stengel and Gene Woodling under the title Veteran Masters, part of the set's low print series. The pairing traded on their shared Yankees history: Stengel managed Woodling through the Yankees' five straight World Series titles from 1949 through 1953, then reunited with him in 1962 as skipper of the expansion Mets. Woodling closed out his 17-year career that season, hitting .276 in his final year split between the Senators and Mets, before his release ahead of the 1963 season. Stengel, in his second year managing the Mets in 1963, remained the elder statesman the card's title referenced.
Casey Stengel, the "Ol' Perfessor," managed the Yankees to five straight World Series titles from 1949 through 1953, then took over the expansion Mets in 1962 and charmed New York through four straight last-place finishes. Gene Woodling - Yankees left fielder on five straight World Series champions (1949-53), a .318 postseason hitter later named Orioles MVP in 1959 before finishing his career in Washington and with the expansion Mets.
