About Stan Williams

Card 42 is a first-series issue and his first Topps card as a New York Yankee, though the photograph was taken before the trade and he is still wearing a Dodgers cap, a detail collectors look for. The season behind it was his tidiest: 9-8 with a 3.21 ERA, 98 strikeouts, and only 57 walks in 146 innings for a rotation that ran Whitey Ford, Jim Bouton, Ralph Terry, and Al Downing. In the World Series he relieved Ford in the opener and gave up one hit over three scoreless innings, but the Dodgers swept New York in four.

Stanley Wilson Williams was a hard-throwing right-hander who pitched 14 major-league seasons, 1958 through 1972, for the Dodgers, Yankees, Indians, Twins, Cardinals, and Red Sox. Born in Enfield, New Hampshire, on September 14, 1936, he was three when the family moved to Denver, and the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him out of East High School in 1954, when he was 17. He reached Los Angeles in May 1958 at 21. Listed at 6-foot-5, with a fastball he was happy to run inside, he answered to "Big Daddy" for his size and strength and to "the Big Hurt" for his habit of moving hitters off the plate. He was an All-Star in 1960, his only such season, and won a career-high 15 games in 1961, though walking more than 100 batters that year showed the command trouble that kept him out of the front rank. He finished 109-94 with a 3.48 ERA, 1,305 strikeouts, 42 saves, and 11 shutouts in 482 games, and he never allowed an earned run in postseason play. He won a World Series ring with the 1959 Dodgers and a second as pitching coach of the 1990 Reds, one of 14 coaching seasons across five clubs. Williams scouted into his 70s, entered the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, and died in 2021 at 84.
