About Hector Lopez

#92 comes from the first series of the 1963 Topps set, issued after Lopez bounced back in 1962: 106 games, 84 of them in the outfield, .275 with six homers and 48 RBIs. A New York writer counted seven game-winning RBIs and ten winning runs scored that year for a 96-win club, and Lopez muffed only two of 182 outfield chances. The Yankees beat San Francisco in seven for their second straight title, though he got in only as a pinch-hitter.

Hector Headley Lopez Swainson, born July 8, 1929, in Colon, Panama, was a third baseman and outfielder who played twelve major league seasons with the Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966. The son of a pitcher, he signed out of Panama with a Quebec club in the Class C Provincial League and reached the Athletics organization from there. He became Kansas City's regular third baseman, a right-handed batter who hit to all fields with good power even as he led American League third basemen in errors. Traded to New York in May 1959, he handled all four infield and all three outfield positions over his career and settled in as the Yankees' third outfielder behind Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Nicknamed "Hector the Hit Collector" by writer George Vecsey, he batted .269 with 136 home runs and 591 RBIs, played on five straight pennant winners and two World Series champions, and later became the first Black manager of a Triple-A club, piloting the Buffalo Bisons in 1969. He died September 29, 2022, at 93.
