1963 Topps #91 Dallas Green

About Dallas Green
Dallas Green's 1963 Topps card, #91, comes out of the set's first series and pictures him as a Philadelphia Phillie. The 1962 line on the back was the best full season of his career to that point: long relief in the first half, the fifth starter's job in the second, 10 starts in 37 games, and a 6-6 record with a 3.83 ERA over 129 1/3 innings for the first Phillies club to finish above .500 since 1953. The longest outing of his career came on August 14 at the Polo Grounds, where he started against the expansion Mets and worked 10 1/3 innings, allowing one run, in a 15-inning game the Phillies eventually won 3-1 without him figuring in the decision.
Dallas Green pitched parts of eight big league seasons, from 1960 through 1967, for the Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Senators, and New York Mets, finishing 20-22 with a 4.26 ERA and 268 strikeouts in 185 games. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from Newport, Delaware, he starred as a pitcher and right fielder at the University of Delaware, going 6-0 with an 0.88 ERA as a junior in 1955 before Phillies scout Jocko Collins signed him that summer. Arm and shoulder trouble that began at Buffalo in May 1959 followed him the rest of his playing days and kept him from matching his early promise, though he gave the Phillies steady work as a spot starter and long reliever while the club climbed from 47-107 in 1961 to a pennant race in 1964. Local legend in Delaware gave him the nickname Spider for his height and long arms. He became far better known after he stopped pitching, managing the 1980 Phillies to the first World Series title in franchise history and, as Chicago Cubs general manager, building the 1984 club that won the NL East. He is not a National Baseball Hall of Fame member, though he was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
